Mobile devices propel Apple to record growth and profits

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Mobile has become the absolute fabric of Apple Inc. (AAPL). The business has changed so dramatically thanks to the iPhone (and increasingly the iPad) that it barely resembles itself from even four years ago.

During the just closed quarter, Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones and 9.25 million iPads. It has sold a cumulative 222 million iOS devices to date. The company now sells twice as many iPads as Macs. It’s an astonishing shift, considering the first Mac was introduced 27 years ago and the iPad’s been out for 15 months. Even the K-12 education market is buying more iPads than Macs. Read more

Emerging devices and the ‘Internet of things’

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Considering the rate at which so many things are being connected wirelessly to the Internet, it’s becoming easier to imagine how cellular connectivity is expect to signal traffic to and from 50 billion emerging devices within the next decade.

Ericsson’s President and CEO Hans Vestberg first mentioned that number to shareholders last year when he outlined the company’s vision and talked about where the next growth opportunities will be for more mobile connectivity.

“Today we already see laptops and advanced handsets connected, but in the future everything that will be benefit from being connected will be connected,” Vestberg said. Read more

BARCELONA, Spain — The availability of enterprise-class features, tools and security is a pervasive concern for virtually ever IT decision maker. While the major smart phone operating systems are adding some of these to their arsenal, there are many others that are being left out of the mix.

While some device manufacturers are largely leaving this task to the OS providers, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is introducing a suite of new enterprise features to their forthcoming Galaxy S II and other Android OS devices coming down the line.

“Up to 30% of smart phone usage today already occurs in the enterprise space and that trend is growing fast,” said Eric Moon, director of Samsung’s enterprise solutions. Read more

Updating a BlackBerry shouldn’t feel like rocket science

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Earlier this week, I took the plunge. Having grown impatient waiting for my carrier to release the official version of OS6 for my BlackBerry 9700, I decided to press my luck and install a leaked version of the new operating system.

Anyone who’s updated their OS on their BlackBerry, leaked version or not, knows that the task can be a little daunting and one that seemingly requires a background in computer science. I’ve taken this step a few times on my BlackBerry devices over the years and each time the experience is akin to reformatting a PC’s hard drive and starting completely over from scratch. Read more

Perception is reality for Chinese vendors

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Perception can become reality in unique ways. So much of our world is predicated on how things are perceived.

On at least some level, this factor is impacting Chinese vendors Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and ZTE Corp. in their aims to break deeper into the U.S. market.

We may never know if the companies were indeed blocked from their latest attempts with Sprint Nextel Corp. or just dismissed for political or business pressures. Regardless, the perception that security might be somehow less secure on their equipment is there. Read more
