Apple earnings slip on rampant iPhone speculation

Apple fired a rare miss last quarter with slowed growth, declining iPhone sales and a drop in profit. iPhone sales were pointedly down in the second half of the quarter after iOS 5 was announced and speculation of a new iPhone intensified.

As always, Apple is playing the slip off in a typically calm, cool and collected manner. The drop in iPhone sales was less than expected, according to executives, and CEO Tim Cook said he is “confident that (Apple) will set an all-time record for iPhone this quarter.”

iPhone sales were up 21% year-over-year to 17.07 million units, but down from the previous two quarters. Year-over-year iPad sales shot up 166% to a new high of 11.12 million, Mac sales jumped 26% to 4.89 million and iPod sales declined 27% to 6.62 million. Read more

iOS fuels 58.5% of all U.S. mobile traffic

iPads generate more mobile traffic than all other iOS devices combined

Mobile devices comprised 6.8% of all online traffic in August 2011. Nearly two-thirds of that traffic came from mobile phones while tablets accounted for the remainder, according to a new report from comScore.

The number of U.S. subscribers consuming mobile media grew 19% in the past year to 116 million people. While the growth is noteworthy, it also highlights the large untapped market for mobile data that still exists. Read more

Not only does Apple Inc. have the most succesful tablet on the market with the iPad, it’s also made significant headway in dominating the enterprise market, a sector that hasn’t been strong historically for the company. Apple is no doubt a heavyweight in the consumer space — the company relishes the success its achieved by designing products for the masses — but the iPad has effectively narrowed the increasingly invisible gap between consumer and enterprise. Apple reports $6B in profits, sells 16.24M iPhones and 7.33M iPads

Apple Inc. (AAPL) had another outstanding quarter — this time raking in $6 billion in profit on $26.74 billion in revenues for the period ending Dec. 25, 2010. The company sold more iPhones, Macs and iPads in the three-month period than in any quarter before.

Apple sold 16.24 million iPhones and 7.33 million iPads. During an earnings call executives expressed confidence that the company could have sold more of both devices, particularly iPhones, if it have been able to meet the full backlog and demand.

More than half of the 19.45 million iPods sold during the quarter were iPod Touch. All told, Apple has sold a cumulative 160 million devices that run on iOS. Read more

Apple eases developer restrictions, opens path to Flash

Apple Inc. knows that much of the success of the iPhone comes thanks to the creative apps that developers have brought to the iPhone experience. In yet another attempt to keep developers in its good graces, the company announced today that it is making some changes to its iOS Developer Program license “to relax some restrictions” it put in place earlier this year.

“We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart,” the company wrote.

What comes as the biggest surprise in Apple’s changes is an apparent about-face on restrictions covering development tools used to create iOS apps. Apple says it is “relaxing all restrictions” on this front “as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.” Read more

@WWDC: Apple holds firm to leader status with iPhone 4

SAN FRANCISCO – Although millions of fanboys and industry watchers have already seen what turned out to be the new iPhone 4 today, Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs still had a few surprises up his sleeve to share during his keynote at the company’s annual developer gathering.

If there is any less excitement or anticipation for Apple’s game-changing mobile device, that sure wasn’t apparent this morning. Lines began forming around the building at 6 a.m. this morning and when the gates to the main hall were finally raised for Jobs’ keynote there was a mad dash for seats (press included). The whole experience felt very rock concert in typical Apple fashion. Read more

@ The Cable Show: Mobile is little more than an after-thought

LOS ANGELES – After spending the last three days up close and personal with the cable industry at its big annual affair, I’m disappointed to report that mobile was hard to find. The wireless innovations and news I’d hoped to see were simply not there.

I’m not sure lobbying will do the trick, but the entire mobile industry should do everything it can to bring wireless out from the distant horizon it sits in now and into clear view for most business in this space who don’t yet see the light. Read more

LOS ANGELES – Kicking off the final day of the cable industry’s big soiree, Federal Communications Commission Chair Julius Genachowski tried to dampen obvious concerns in the room over his latest regulatory plans. After duly applauding the cable industry for the massive investment it put into building broadband infrastructure, even going so far as to call it a “great American success story,” he pointed out how badly the country is lagging on rate of innovative change.

Whether or not those in the audience shared his sentiment, Genachowski said his core goal is to drive faster connections and reap the rewards that will flow from greater broadband deployments and innovation. He believes broadband capacity, penetration and the nation’s access to the Internet as a whole will be one of, if not the, largest driving factor in job growth and social change for the country at large.
