iPhone 4 officially drops on Verizon Wireless today

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

I did it again. I bought another iPhone. This time it’s the same iPhone that I already own. Less exciting. Nothing new. Just the same old iPhone 4, but this time with Verizon Wireless.

Instead of waiting in line for maybe 10 grueling hours to get my hands on Verizon’s iPhone 4 today, I decided that having it in my hands before Mobile World Congress wasn’t worth it, so I pre-ordered online.

Sure I have to wait another week, maybe more, and I might even miss the multiple delivery attempts and have to pick it up in person at some shipping facility in a far-off industrial park. Either way, the money has been spent and the process has begun. Read more

Apple reports $6B in profits, sells 16.24M iPhones and 7.33M iPads

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Apple Inc. (AAPL) had another outstanding quarter — this time raking in $6 billion in profit on $26.74 billion in revenues for the period ending Dec. 25, 2010. The company sold more iPhones, Macs and iPads in the three-month period than in any quarter before.

Apple sold 16.24 million iPhones and 7.33 million iPads. During an earnings call executives expressed confidence that the company could have sold more of both devices, particularly iPhones, if it have been able to meet the full backlog and demand.

More than half of the 19.45 million iPods sold during the quarter were iPod Touch. All told, Apple has sold a cumulative 160 million devices that run on iOS. Read more

My cameo next to John Oliver on ‘The Daily Show’

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

NEW YORK — I finally got my big break! I’ve written thousands of articles and columns over the span of at least a decade and all it really took to get noticed was me sitting next to John Oliver.

My family, friends and colleagues don’t really care about what I wrote last week or this column I’m writing now, do they? Television is what matters — I should know that. It turns out, if you’re not on TV or in the movies you’re just another wannabe.

I’m still a wannabe, but at least I can say I was on “The Daily Show.” Read more

New York on the fly

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Like many journalists just returning home from a hectic schedule at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, I spent part of my weekend and Monday morning scrambling to arrange travel to New York to cover Verizon Wireless’ iPhone announcement.

The event was announced last minute on Friday afternoon, which doesn’t help matters much. But then again, practically everyone was preparing for the most anticipated news in all of wireless to finally get announced so I had to be there. This is how I did it all on my phone once I landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Read more

@ Verizon Wireless’ iPhone announcement: Short on surprises, big on delivery

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

NEW YORK — It finally happened. Verizon Wireless (VZ) is bringing the iPhone 4 to its network, putting to rest a question that’s plagued the wireless industry for years.

After trumpeting the strengths of the carrier’s recently launched LTE network, Verizon Wireless announced that its first version of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) hit device would only enjoy 3G speeds on its CDMA network.

Verizon has known for some time that “the company that basically invented the smart phone market would have to have a place on our network,” said Lowell McAdam, president and COO at Verizon Communications Inc., Verizon Wireless’ parent company. “Today we are extremely gratified, and I can’t think of a better word, to announce that the iPhone 4″ will be on Verizon’s network. Google Voice app finally launches on iPhone

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

It’s been exactly two months since Apple Inc. acquiesced and approved a third-party Google Voice app for the iPhone, but now there’s finally an official offering from Google Inc.

The new Google Voice app, which made its debut on the App Store yesterday, is simpler and less noisy than the third-party apps that have been selling on the store since September. It also brings one key feature that presumably only Google can deliver: SMS notifications and dialing in the background. While Google has opened its API for the service it reportedly keeps some key features like those close to its chest, making it the sole provider of the key features that practically every user wants. Apple eases developer restrictions, opens path to Flash

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

Apple Inc. knows that much of the success of the iPhone comes thanks to the creative apps that developers have brought to the iPhone experience. In yet another attempt to keep developers in its good graces, the company announced today that it is making some changes to its iOS Developer Program license “to relax some restrictions” it put in place earlier this year.

“We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart,” the company wrote.

What comes as the biggest surprise in Apple’s changes is an apparent about-face on restrictions covering development tools used to create iOS apps. Apple says it is “relaxing all restrictions” on this front “as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.” Read more

@WWDC: Apple holds firm to leader status with iPhone 4

**As published in RCR Wireless News**

SAN FRANCISCO – Although millions of fanboys and industry watchers have already seen what turned out to be the new iPhone 4 today, Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs still had a few surprises up his sleeve to share during his keynote at the company’s annual developer gathering.

If there is any less excitement or anticipation for Apple’s game-changing mobile device, that sure wasn’t apparent this morning. Lines began forming around the building at 6 a.m. this morning and when the gates to the main hall were finally raised for Jobs’ keynote there was a mad dash for seats (press included). The whole experience felt very rock concert in typical Apple fashion. Read more
