Apple Inc. (AAPL) had another outstanding quarter — this time raking in $6 billion in profit on $26.74 billion in revenues for the period ending Dec. 25, 2010. The company sold more iPhones, Macs and iPads in the three-month period than in any quarter before.
Apple sold 16.24 million iPhones and 7.33 million iPads. During an earnings call executives expressed confidence that the company could have sold more of both devices, particularly iPhones, if it have been able to meet the full backlog and demand.
More than half of the 19.45 million iPods sold during the quarter were iPod Touch. All told, Apple has sold a cumulative 160 million devices that run on iOS. Read more

Apple Inc. knows that much of the success of the iPhone comes thanks to the creative apps that developers have brought to the iPhone experience. In yet another attempt to keep developers in its good graces, the company announced today that it is making some changes to its iOS Developer Program license “to relax some restrictions” it put in place earlier this year.
“We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart,” the company wrote.
What comes as the biggest surprise in Apple’s changes is an apparent about-face on restrictions covering development tools used to create iOS apps. Apple says it is “relaxing all restrictions” on this front “as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.” Read more

Music has turned out to be a rather tough proposition on mobile. While apps like Pandora have soared in both popularity and revenue-generation capabilities, other apps like RealNetworks’ Rhapsody have garnered less favorable reviews and market penetration.
Still, there are a growing number of free and subscription-based streaming services to choose from, which makes the “music on mobile” market all the more compelling to participate in. Case in point: The Rdio app. Read more

Although I hate to admit it and try to cover my tracks as much as possible, I probably belong in the Apple fanboy camp — at least one of the lower echelons of fanboydom. I’ve owned all three generations of the iPhone. I’ve returned them, exchanged them, passed them on and even sold them when my relationship with each of them reached an anticlimactic end. I waited in line at multiple stores for the iPhone 3G launch in summer 2008. I know, it’s a problem.
But after following Apple’s news about it’s “latest creation,” the iPad, I think I’m finally on the road to recovery. Sure, I wish I was in San Francisco for the announcement on Wednesday, just as I was for a few previous Apple press events, but now that I know more about the iPad I’m not convinced I missed much of anything.
Apple will undoubtedly sell more of its latest gadget than just about anyone predicts in the short run, but I’m not sure we’ll reach a point where all of our friends have one or wish they had one in the long run. Read more

SAN FRANCISCO—Apple’s Steve Jobs took the stage in San Francisco this morning with a blaring quote overhead that read: “reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Then he broke into the task at hand. In addition to bringing NBC content back to the iTunes store, Apple is also adding high-definition TV shows for $2.99 each, including shows from NBC.
—iTunes 8: A new version was released today that includes new browsing capabilities and a Genius recommendation feature that automatically creates playlists from songs in the iTunes library. Jobs: “It helps you rediscover music in your music library.” The Genius algorithms, which were developed internally, will pull up results instantly after users opt in to share their library’s information with Apple. Once users opt in, iTunes will upload information about users’ libraries anonymously and combine the knowledge from other iTunes users that do the same. Genius playlists range from 25, 50, 75 or 100 tracks and includes a Genius Sidebar that pulls up recommended tracks from the iTunes store. Results are automatically updated once a week. Read more
